The first time I got glasses was when I was in elementary school. I remember squinting a lot in class and trying to sit in the front so that I could see better. Then in high school, I got contacts because glasses weren’t considered “cool”. Later on in my 20’s, I got Lasik and I was so happy because I didn’t have to wear glasses OR contacts! It was so liberating. It was like I had a brand new pair of eyes. I remember going to get my eyes examined every year during that time.
But after all that investment of time and money to fix my eyes, I forgot about getting an annual eye exam! I thought my vision was corrected so there was nothing else I needed to do but boy was I wrong.
VSP Vision Care Survey
Recently, VSP Vision Care released data from a survey of 1,000 Americans focused on eye health. Eight out of ten people rated vision as an important sense and almost everyone surveyed agreed that healthy eyes was important. BUT only half of them got eye exams! Why? Because either they didn’t think they needed new glasses or contacts, it was too expensive or they didn’t have vision insurance. (I’m guilty of being in the half that didn’t get eye exams!)
Of the parents who were surveyed, eight in ten parents agreed that a regular eye exam helps kids do their best in school BUT only four in ten wait until their kids complain about their vision before scheduling an eye exam. This was exactly what happened to me when I was little. I didn’t know what seeing clearly was like and my parents didn’t take me for an exam until I had trouble seeing in class.
Go Get an Annual Eye Exam
I honestly don’t remember the last time I had a comprehensive eye exam so I know it’s time for me to do that soon. Getting an eye exam is more than just reading an eye chart. Signs of a lot of serious health issues can be detected from the health of your eyes! I had no idea that an eye exam could detect signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, bran tumors and other health conditions.
Do you guys get annual eye exams? Or is that the last thing on your list of things to do? Well, a part of your overall health and wellness is dependent on vision health so it’s important to schedule a comprehensive eye exam every year! Even if you think you don’t have time, you can find one near you by visiting VSP.com! They make it easy by providing a huge database of VSP network doctors so you really have no excuse! Not only do they make it easy for you, VSP is the ONLY national not-for-profit vision insurance company. I’m going to find a vision care provider near me and schedule an eye exam ASAP. I hope you do too!
